Slovak citizenship by descent is more than a legal process—it can be a deeply personal journey back to your family’s history, heritage, and homeland. But turning a family connection to Slovakia into a citizenship or Slovak Living Abroad application can involve generations of genealogy research, historical records, Slovak archives, birth and marriage certificates, government procedures, document preparation, and coordination from outside Slovakia.
Wendy Jamieson understands this process because she has lived it herself.
Wendy began her own journey to Slovak citizenship after Slovakia’s citizenship-by-descent law took effect in 2022. With all four of Wendy’s maternal great-grandparents originating from Slovakia, her family history quickly became a personal journey. Her grandmother’s parents came from Veľký Lipník, while her grandfather’s parents came from Beloveža. She researched her family history, traced her ancestors, gathered historical records, navigated the application requirements, and ultimately obtained Slovak citizenship by descent in October 2024 through her great-grandparent lineage. Her great-grandfather, Michal Chrušč, her anchor ancestor, left Beloveza for the United States in 1911.
Her experience did not end when she received her citizenship.
In May 2025, Wendy relocated to Slovakia and now lives there full-time. Being physically in Slovakia has given her firsthand experience with the country, its government offices, registry authorities, archives, documentation requirements, and the practical realities of establishing a life in Slovakia as an American with Slovak ancestry.
